Leitrim County Council is to carry out a review of speed limits on rural local roads - with a view to reducing them by 20 kilometres an hour.
The default limit will drop from 80 kilometres an hour to 60 in November, unless special speed limits are adopted by the council.
It comes after the government passed legislation to lower the speed limits, in response to the rising number of road deaths.
But Sligo-Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, from Sinn Féin, says Leitrim councillors will have a significant say.
