Leitrim county council is being urged to liaise with private landowners who've been the victims of dumping on their lands.
Land owners are currently responsible for clean up costs of illegally dumped material on their land, while items dumped alongside public roads or on council lands are handled by the local authority.
Speaking at this months meeting of Leitrim County Council, Councillor Enda Stenson spoke of one incident where a farmer had been targeted multiple times over a number of weeks, with bags thrown on his land full of household waste.
Councillor Stenson says the owner of the property had resorted to hiding along the road over night in an effort to try to catch the perpetrators.
In a call supported by the majority other representatives, the local authority was urged to help these private land owners and share some of the cleanup cost when illegal dumping occurs.
