Leitrim councillor accused of 'populism' after calling for doubling of council's state funding

The council's budget for this year is over €52 million, which is used for roads, housing, leisure and other areas.

There is a call for the amount of central government funding allocated to Leitrim County Council to be doubled.

The motion, from Independent councillor Des Guckian, will be discussed at Monday's meeting of the local authority.

Councillor Guckian will ask other councillors to back his call on Monday, but Fine Gael councillor Enda McGloin, from Drumshanbo, is rejecting it.

Councillor Guckian declined to comment until Monday's council meeting.
