People with planning permission that's due to expire in the near future should get a substantial extension due to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
That's according to Leitrim county councillor Finola Armstrong-McGuire who believes the current extension is not enough for those facing losing their permission.
The Fine Gael councillor raised the issue at this week's meeting of the Carrick-On-Shannon Municipal District.
She secured the support of her fellow councillors in an effort to write to the Minister for Planning and Local Government to urge him to change the national policy.
New guidelines have been introduced due to the pandemic and allow for a 56 day extension to the end of planning permission.
Councillor Armstrong-McGuire believes this is not enough for people who are facing delays through no fault of their own due to the Covid crisis.
She's calling for local representatives at all levels across the country to support an emergency change of the planning laws.
