A Leitrim County Councillor is urging Longford Local Link to create a new route across the county border to help a number of Leitrim villages.
Sean McGowan made the call at a recent meeting of the Carrick on Shannon Municipal District.
According to Councillor McGowan, many people in East Leitrim travel to Longford town for their shopping as it is the closest retail centre.
He's urging the transport body to trial a route to help residents access the town for their shopping in a convenient manner.
Responding to the motion, Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire stated while it's always important to keep business local, the reality is that many people in villages such as Bornacoola and Fearglass need to do their shopping in Longford.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news at the meeting, Councillor McGowan believes the route could be a commercial success:
"The plain simple facts are the people in the areas I'm talking about, Fearglass and Bohey and all that area and into Bornacoola, all that area drift towards Longford for their shopping.
It's all about providing a service for the community and asking to try it two days a week and see how it goes.
If it doesn't work it doesn't work, but I think there is a demand for it there."
