A Leitrim councillor is calling for an annual budget to be ring-fenced for the maintenance of a Mohill River.
Thomas Mulligan says the stretch of water located at the lower end of the town has seen severe foliage growth of up to six feet in recent times.
At this month's meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon M.D. he called for cleaning of the river to be carried out immediately. However, council officials say the drainage grant provided by Leitrim County Council is being expended on the Lough Rynn drainage system no additional funds are available for any other drainage systems .
Councillor Mulligan hopes to raise the issue at the annual estimates meeting in November.
"The area engineer indicated a figure of 3,000 each year would do the job. There's a lot of extra foliage growth in it. It's extremely ugly. We'll be fighting this at the estimates meeting. We'll be fighting to get a specific ring-fenced sum of money to be included annually in our estimates".
