A Leitrim County Councillor is calling for a 25 percent across the board raise for health care workers following a stay in a local Hospital.
Councillor Des Guckian spent six weeks in Sligo University Hospital undergoing treatment for a medical condition.
At this months meeting of Leitrim County Council, the independent representative described the high quality of care he received from staff at the hospital.
Despite the hospital facing staff shortages and overcrowding, councillor Guckian said the care patients were receiving was exemplary.
In a motion backed by all attending councillors, the council agreed to support a call on the minister of health for the pay rise.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news, Councillor Guckian says staff face uncertainty every day.
''One senior nurse did say to me, well, you know, on any given morning, we just don't know how many of the staff will be in because of COVID and everything else that was happening. So I definitely felt sorry for them. And the doctors did their level best for everybody as well. And I know that the consultant that I had, he went again above and beyond the call of duty for me, but they were doing it for everybody. It wasn't for me alone.''
