A local councillor is calling for a fresh injection of funding to support river dredging
The issue came before the most recent meeting of the Carrick on Shannon Municipal District
Councillor Seán McGowan argued that the current budget for cleaning and dredging rivers within the district is simply not sufficient
He says that a funding stream from the OPW needs to be put in place in order to allow the practice to continue
'We need a serious injection of funding to try and address this problem once and for all as they would be those small rivers that wouldn't have been cleaned in decades so that is the extent of the problem . So unless we get this funding those problems will never be solved.'
