A Leitrim county councillor says the scourge of ash dieback could be turned into a slight positive if funding is made available to use diseased trees as fuel.
Sinn Fein councillor Brendan Barry had a notice of motion at this week's meeting of Ballinamore Municipal District calling on the Environment and Agriculture ministers to make funding available for the trees to be cut down and harvested for fuel.
Councillor Barry says the diseased trees present a daily hazard to human life, especially if they are situated along roads or paths.
He says they also are known as a good timber for burning and this could be used for sustainable fuel rather than being allowed to rot away and release carbon into the atmosphere…
