A Leitrim County Councillor is calling on the local authority to cease developing projects with any company that has a history of leaving unfinished housing estates.
Councillor Des Guckian put forward the argument at the May meeting of Leitrim County Council. He believes there is a gap in the law that allows some developers to fail to reach development goals or to provide contribution fees.Councillor Guckian says that these individuals write off their company before creating a new one and resume construction works.
The Independent Carrick on Shannon Councillor says this causes a major financial burden on the local authority.
'They were seemingly doing so well in the Celtic Tiger era, they went bust very rapidly and they left an awful mess behind them, and the bonds that they had laid down were totally inadequate.
Each council has to be responsible for the management of these unfinished estates and the administration, and I think that's quite a drain on the funding of the council, and it could be put to much better use.
There's a gap in the law there which will allow these fellas to maybe form a new company and come back in as if nothing ever happened.'
