A Leitrim Councillor believes the local authority should engage with the IFA to raise awareness around the cutting of grass verges on local roads.
At a meeting of Carrick-on-Shannon MD this week Sean McGowan called on the council to put in place a programme of works to cut back heavy vegetation and foliage.
He says this is particularly needed at junctions on local roads which join with other local and regional roads.
However council officials say local road hedges and verges are the responsibility of the land owner and the council will only carry out works at regional road junctions.
It's understood this will be carried out in July at which time verges and hedges along the N4 will also be maintained.
Speaking to Shannonside FM News Councillor McGowan believes the council should contact the IFA to encourage farmers to cut back the heavy foliage.
''There's a lot of very busy local roads and there's no scheme there. The council don't have the resources to do them. I was hoping the council could talk or liaise with the IFA and request them to ask their members to cut along the junctions. The landowner is responsible for cutting the hedges and grass verges. It's very blind for people coming out of those roads and you could have to go out more than halfway on the road to get a view.''
