Road work projects across the region will see significant delays should state funding for local authorities not keep up with inflation.
That's the view of Leitrim County Councillor Enda McGloin who believes the Minister for Public Expenditure and the Minister for Transport must provide significant additional funding to Local Authorities next year.
Addressing the meeting, the Ballinamore area Councillor stated that items such as tar, concrete, payroll and energy costs are all seeing major price rises.
He claims it will not be possible for the local authority to conduct the same amount of work in 2023 compared to 2022, if the budget remains the same.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news following the meeting, Councillor McGloin says that additional funding is crucial to maintaining essential services.
''It's very obvious in terms of road funding, for example, the price of tar, all of that is directly connected the price of oil and that has seen a significant jump. So unless local authorities receive a fairly significant rise in what comes from central government, it means that the roadworks programme as a strong example would be much diminished. That's something we want to avoid and if we see a decline in our funding, then obviously that whole area will be reduced in terms of what we cover.''
