At the same time hauliers were in Dublin protesting about fuel prices, the December meeting of Ballinamore M.D heard how the increasing costs at the pumps were affecting the people of Leitrim.
A motion from Councillor Brendan Barry called on the local authority to appeal to the government party leaders to reduce the taxation on fuel to lessen what he described as the spiralling cost of living
Quoting the AA Roadwatch website, the Sinn Fein councillor claimed that diesel was roughly one euro twenty cent in January but the average price for November was €1.63.
Councillor Paddy O'Rourke told the meeting that he was astonished when he filled his truck with €800 worth of diesel at the weekend and he is not able to pass on the rising cost to the farming community he serves.
He also was critical of the Dublin protest of haulers, which he felt would not advance the case of truckers and transport people in general.
Councillor Caillian Ellis also claimed that his tractor required €100 of diesel recently to only three quarters fill it and claimed there was a huge expense on everyone, from farmers to shopkeepers.
