Councillors from Leitrim are to meet with the Environment Minister in the coming weeks to discuss how planning can be approved for one-off housing in the county.
The September meeting of the local authority heard that a revised code of practice for septic tanks and domestic waste discharge is expected to only have minor alteration to current rules.
At present Leitrim's soil is not deemed of good enough quality for traditional septic tanks to be installed - with alternative options proving to be too expensive for many potential householders.
It was hoped that a review of EPA guidelines may have allowed a special exemption for Leitrim but this now seems unlikely.
Councillor Sean McGowan admits the lack of progress on the issue is something that will be raised with Minister Eamon Ryan, and admits the news that a lack of progress has been made is disappointing.
