A Leitrim Councillor has accused the local authority of being a bad landlord. Councillor Des Guckian made the claim over what he says is an unacceptable response from Leitrim County Council over the issue of damp and mold in a number of council homes. Councillor Guckian called for a Mohill couple and their unborn child to be given new accommodation over what he says is a urgent health risk. Gary and Deborah, who is three months pregnant, live in a council house in Mohill severely affected by mold. According to the couple, the mold has made its way into clothes, furniture and now electronics in the home such as switches, leading to safety concerns according to the councillor.
The independent Councillor says the local authority has been putting the issue on the long finger and 'covering up' complaints. A report by specialists Damp Master was compiled, with the results showing significant works needed on site. The couple are worried that while the works are scheduled for the end of the month, they will not be moved to alternative accommodation until the works start. This has led them to highlight further health concerns about staying in the property as both individuals suffer from a number of health issues.
Replying to the motion, Director of Services Justin Fannon stated that while they would not comment on individual tenancies, he understands that resolutions in general might not happen as quick as tenants may like. The motion was supported in part by councillors Maeve Reynolds and Sean McGowan who both called for the housing department in the council to treat this as a matter of urgency. Leitrim The council executive confirmed they would do so.
