Plans to construct a new water sports facility and carpark in Drumshanbo have taken a major step forward.
The majority of Leitrim County Councillors today supported plans for the new facility and carpark at Acres Lake.
The council is hoping to develop a facility centre for water sports at Acres Lake in Drumshanbo as well as a 70 space car park and a pedestrian cross on the R207.
Some residents have highlighted concerns over the construction of the centre, the size of the car park and the drainage of oil and fuel from the car park into the lake resulting in possible pollution.
At today's Council meeting in Carrigallen, the majority of Councillors supported the plans.
Councillor Enda McGloin claimed that the project will help longstanding safety issues around parking along the waterway.
While councillor Brendan Barry stated that locals will see the benefit of the centre and carpark once its operational.
However, Councillor Des Guckian recorded his opposition to the plans, stating the size if the car park was too much, and the project should have been developed on the other side of town.
According to Councillor Guckian, there is a strong drugs trade taking place along the Shannon and he fears the proposed facility will make Drumshanbo a hub for illegal activities.
The Part 8 process has been successful in the council chamber and will move on to the next step.
