Leitrim County Council hopes to develop almost 140 new social housing units in the next five years.
The December meeting Carrick-on-Shannon's M.D heard a new housing action plan will hope to develop the homes between now and 2026.
The local authority revealed that there are over 500 people on the county's housing list at present, with a net of transfers resulting in a net need of just over 200.
One third of the need, or approximately 170, is in Carrick-on-Shannon, with 217 in total in the M.D overall.
The majority of people seeking homes are hoping for one and two-bedroom properties.
The Council hopes to use a variety of schemes to develop more social houses in the county, including Part Five developments, as well as buy and renew schemes and turnkey projects with developers.
The plan is to be sent to the government for further approval before its final adoption by the Council.
