Leitrim County Council is to invest significantly in an advertising campaign to tackle the 'endemic' dumping of rubbish across the county.
The February meeting of the Carrick-on-Shannon M.D heard that the Council hopes to hire a second waste enforcement officer this year to tackle issues of fly-tipping.
Councillor Sean McGowan revealed that he was recently made aware of up to 50 bags of household rubbish dumped in the countryside, and claimed that unless someone is made an example of, the Council will be clearing up dumping all the time.
In response, the Council confirmed that it will be rolling out a multi-media awareness campaign to encourage the public to manage their waste properly and to encourage people to report those they suspect of dumping illegally.
The meeting also heard of a 'blitz' style campaign that may be carried out in towns where households will be asked how they are disposing of their waste and to check for active accounts.
