Leitrim County Council has opted for a digital delivery of their latest litter awareness campaign to engage with a younger audience.
The local authority has partnered with two TikTok influencers Seamus Lehane and Ralph McKeown who have thousands of followers on their social media accounts.
Both men have made videos making use of GAA references and comedy sketches to appeal to a wide audience.
The content which was created in partnership with the council and the GAA has resulted in 50,000 views on the TikTok accounts so far, as well as 10,000 on the council's own social media platforms.
Patricia Holohan from the Environment section of Leitrim council says research has led them to trying this new approach.
"We decided to go this route because we work with green schools, tidy towns, and community groups and we use radio, print, and our own social media but we've done some research to realise that the hard age group to hit is the 15-30 year old age group. That's the age group that is out and about and socialising and we wanted to get the message across to them also. We engaged 2 influencers and we developed some content with them using tongue in cheek messaging just to spark their interest and get them to share it".
