Cormac Flynn made the call following the decision of Leitrim County Council to increase commercial rates by 5 percent.

Independent Councillor Des Guckian objected to the increase citing a letter delivered to council members from the Carrick Chamber of Commerce asking them to retain the existing rate.

Cllr Paddy Farrell says the animals are causing car accidents, destroying farmland and damaging property, branding the issue a ‘pandemic’.

Fine Gael councillor Enda McGloin says they're a big drawback when it comes to attracting tourism and investment.

Local Independent councillor Enda Stenson says it's a major boost to the area.

Cllr Des Guckian raised their plight at the most recent Carrick-on-Shannon Municipal District meeting.

The funding was announced by Minister of State for Planning and Local Government, Alan Dillon.

The proposed development would see two new classrooms and the removal of existing prefabricated classrooms.
