A Leitrim environment expert believes there is no major cause for alarm following the discovery of Covid 19 in waste water treatments systems in the Shannonside region.
The National SARS Wastewater Surveillance Programme analysed samples from nearly 70 wastewater plants across the country for the presence of the coronavirus last week.
Overall, COVID-19 was detected in 67 of 68 treatment plants tested which it is claimed is in keeping with the high incidence rate of the virus nationally.
Drumkeerin resident Professor Frances Lucy, who is Head of Department of Environmental Science Institute of Technology, Sligo, says research shows that Covid in waste water supplies poses no public health risk.
