Leitrim Fire services urge public not to delay in reporting bog fires

Leitrim fire services are highlighting a mistaken assumption that members of the public will be charged a call-out fee for reporting forest or bog fires.

Leitrim's Chief Fire Officer is encouraging members of the public to call 999 or 112 if they spot a bog or forest fire in the coming weeks.

The fire official says many people think they might be liable for a charge if they call to report such an incident, but he says this isn't the case at all and they'd like to get reports of fire as soon as possible in order to be able to stop them becoming bigger and posing larger threats as they go on.

The appeal comes as bog fires destroyed hundreds of acres recently in Wicklow and on the Slieve Bloom mountains.

Similar fires have caused damage to hundreds more acres of bog and forestry, particularly in Roscommon and Leitrim over recent years.

Speaking on the Joe Finnegan show this morning, Finian Joyce says the sooner the brigade knows about these incidents the more can be done to stop them spreading:
