Green party councillors have called on their party leader and Minister of the Environment to reject an application for a North Leitrim Prospecting licence.
Fintridge Resources Ltd, based in Omagh, is seeking the licence to search for gold in several townlands across the county.
A group of 27 Green Party councillors from across the country have signed a letter calling on Minister Eamonn Ryan to deny the licence citing environmental concerns any possible future mining would have on the area.
A rally held over the weekend saw a large crowd gather in Manorhamilton to protest the prospecting.
Speaking in the Dail last week, Minister Ryan said any prospecting license was unlikely to find anything of note that would lead to an application for a mining licence.
Green Party National Coordinator and local Leitrim representative Bláithín Gallagher says the proposed license is a Trojan horse for mining companies to get a foothold here.
