Leitrim home to majority of locally settled Ukrainian refugees

Nationally there are now over 48,000 Ukrainians settled in Ireland who fled the conflict.

It's estimated that around 2300 Ukraine refugees are now living in the Shannonside region - with the majority in County Leitrim.

According to the CSO, approximately 48,000 Ukrainian refugee have fled the war against Russia to come to Ireland.

The CSO figures show in the three weeks to August 7th just under 3,300 people arrived in Ireland, suggesting around 1,000 people are continuing to arrive every week.

It's understood that just under 90 Ukrainian refugees are living in County Leitrim, just under 250 in County Longford, 452 in County Roscommon and just over 780 in County Westmeath.

He says the data shows it is mostly young women and children settling in Ireland :

In the figures that we have, women aged 20 and over account for 40% of arrivals to date.

While indoividuals either male or female aged 19 or less account for 36%.

What we're clearly seeing is that the arrivals are made up of women and children.
