The Chairman of Leitrim IFA says the issue of grass regrowth is not a major concern for farmers in the county right now.
Liam Gilligan was commenting about reports today that conditions in many areas around the country have been classified as being in "absolute drought" following over 20 days without rain.
The north Leitrim farmer says with Spring coming that bit later to the west and north west, and the heavy rains in April , the land hasn't been deprived of moisture for very long at this stage.
Speaking on the Let's Talk show today, Liam Gilligan says a lot of farmers have taken to clearing land during the fine weather, or making small amounts of hay.
He says many will only now be turning their attention to a second cut of silage
"To a great extent it isn't an issue in the south of the county of Leitrim. 3 weeks ago, we were crying looking for good weather becasue we had that much rain. We wouldn't be geared up for the silage until now. I think a lot of farmers are gearing up, that they're going to go away and take a second cut now. It might be slowing up, to say it has stopped in this end of the country, I wouldn't say it has. Farmers still tell you around here that the dew at night is still keeping a bit of growth going ".
