The Leitrim native has diagnosed with MND 43 years ago.

A Leitrim man, who is believed to be one of the longest motor neuron disease survivors in the world, has expressed his sadness at the news that former journalist Charlie Bird has contracted the condition.

The 72-year-old confirmed on Wednesday that he had been diagnosed with MND after noticing changes in his voice earlier this year.

Cloone native Andy Mc Govern is living with the disease for the last 43 years and cites a trip to Lourdes in 1990 for helping him cope and raise awareness of the medical condition which has no known cure.
