A Leitrim postmaster is encouraging the community to use their local post office to ensure it survives.
The message comes from Mary Flanagan in Mohill who says staff in these offices are paid by the Postmaster not An Post.
They get paid by transactions and not a set fee or salary.
The local woman is also concerned over the introduction of a new digital stamp which could see less people using the facility.
In recent weeks a post card has been sent to every house in the country detailing the new digital service.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news Mary says if people don't use their local Post office it will close.
''We're thankful to the Government, they have subsidised us since January so only for that a lot of our doors would be closed this year, this year would see the end of us. We are paid by transaction but that alone won't keep the door open, by the time you have to pay your costs and staff. Unless we have the customers through the door doing their business with us, paying their bills, getting their social welfare, there's no hope for any of the post offices going forward.''
