A meeting of Leitrim County Council has heard the winter roads maintenance plan is at maximum capacity.
It comes following calls from several councillors that all roads serving primary schools in Leitrim should be salted during cold spells.
At a plenary meeting of Leitrim Council this week it emerged 14 schools are not included on priority gritting routes during icy weather.
There are over 2300 km of roads in Leitrim with approximately 500km of roads treated, these are classified as Priority 1 national roads while Priority 2 covers the Regional Roads.
However Councillor Padraig Fallon called on the council in the interest of safety to salt all roads which had a school on them, this was echoed by all local representatives.
Council officials say the plan was revised and greatly expanded upwards of 30% in the last two years,
The meeting heard the council does not have the resources to expand the routes any further.
They acknowledged that some roads close to schools are treated as priority 3 roads meaning these roads may receive intermittent treatment during certain severe weather events, however they are not part of the normal winter service program.
Council officials stated salt bins are available at 43 locations across the county to enable people in the community to use them to treat areas that they unable to get to.
It's understood some of these bins were used by schools in mid December during the cold snap and schools wishing to avail of one are encouraged to contact the council.
