A Leitrim TD is accusing what he describes as 'fascist elements' of spreading rumours in the county in recent days to create fear and division in the community.
Sinn Fein's Martin Kenny says claims emerged in recent days that large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers were going to be moved into two specified locations in Carrick-on-Shannon.
He says that having checked out the situation with the owners of the buildings involved he's satisfied there are no such plans being made.
The Sinn Fein TD says the rumours are deliberately planted to cause concern and annoyance in local communities.
"These rumours have been spread by, and have originated from, fascist elements who are trying to spread fear and division among people. They're totally untrue. Leitrim County Council have confirmed they have no intention, they own the former Bank of America building, and have no intention of using it for anything else other than developing business in the region. I've also checked it out with the people who own Cartown House and again there are no plans to use it for accommodation for asylum seekers or those looking for international protection and so forth. There's no truth at all in these rumours and people should have no reason to be agitated or worried about it at all"
