A Leitrim TD has accused the Government of failing to provide basic transport supports to people with disabilities.
Deputy Martin Kenny is calling for the coalition to engage with the Disabled Drivers and Passengers Scheme.
It provides relief from VRT and VAT on an adapted car, as well as an exemption from motor tax and a yearly fuel grant.
The call comes following a report from the Ombudsman for Public Services, which highlighted difficulties faced by people with disabilities when accessing both public and private transport.
The Sinn Fein representative says the eligibility criteria for the scheme is far too stringent and must be widened.
''In recent years they've got more and more difficult to attain and an awful lot of people have been turned down because to be part of the scheme you have to have a primary medical cert and it's extremely hard to get. The body who were over it, the appeals board, actually resigned in protest over how the scheme wasn't' working properly.''
