A Leitrim TD has described anti social incidents on train and public transport in the north west as 'brutality' against commuters.
Sinn Fein brought a motion to the Dail last night seeking government support to develop affordable, reliable and safe public transport
Martin Kenny outlined that he has been contacted several times by passengers on local trains who have witnessed open drug abuse and violence.
He told the Dail that some of the behaviour cannot be simply classed as anti-social and it is much more serious than that;
"I have had numerous people who have contacted me with problems on the train going from Sligo to Dublin, on other train services, and particularly here in the city of Dublin, the whole issue of what is normally called "anti-social behaviour". It's much more serious than that, it's actually attacks on people, it's brutality. The real problem here is that if we're going to make public transport one of the main facets of our society, we have to make it safe for people and one of the only ways we can do that is to have a dedicated transport police service in place across the state".
