Leitrim Sinn Fein Deputy Martin Kenny says he hopes common sense can prevail when it comes to providing some respite facilities for families in the county.
A meeting was held with Minister Anne Rabbitte who has special responsibility for Disability in May of this year and it was hoped that an existing facility at Cloonamahon near Boyle in Roscommon could be refitted to provide a fast solution.
Many families in south Leitrim have no nearby facility to use and the situation was described in May as an emergency.
Deputy Martin Kenny raised the issue again in the Dail in recent years and said he was dismayed at the lack of progress on the two bungalow facility.
Speaking on the Lets Talk show today, Deputy Kenny says he met with the HSE on the issue since and now understands that HIQA could have some technical difficulties with the space.
"HIQA approval for using them for respite will be sought and I think it should have been sought long ago. The HSE and HIQA have work to but very often the perfect can be the enemy of the good and I think where we have a building that's adequate and reasonably good and people badly need a service, it should be used. Sometimes HIQA come along and say that's it's not perfect so it can't be used and I think that's where these problems can kick in".
