The Court of Appeal has found nothing wrong with the sentence handed down to Lisa Smith for ISIS membership.
Last year, the former member of the Irish Defence Forces was jailed for 15-months, but she later appealed the severity of her sentence
Last May, Lisa Smith became the first Irish person to be convicted of being a member of a terrorist organisation on foreign soil. She was jailed for 15-months. However, her lawyers argued her sentence should have been fully suspended. In their appeal, they claimed the sentence was excessive. They accused the judges of not giving enough weight to the mitigating factors in the case. They also claimed she should have been given credit for the time she spent in various detention camps in Turkey and Syria before being repatriated to Ireland.
In a judgement, spanning almost 100-pages, the Court of Appeal rejected all their arguments, which means the sentence stands. Her case will be before the court again later this month as she pursues an appeal against the guilty verdict
