Over 300 people attended a public meeting in last night to oppose plans to extend at the accommodation centre in Lissywollen.

Local councillors are trying to prevent the plans from going ahead.

It's understood the decision in part is due to the sub-zero temperatures.

The tented village is set to open today.

The tents are being erected at the Direct Provision Centre at Lissywollen Athlone

The housing development involves over 100 houses and apartments at Cartrontroy Athlone

It would be the second major housing infrastructure project for the area.
