Castlerea’s Gareth Scahill says he’s in “complete shock” after he was appointed as a senator - only eight months after he became a councillor for the first time.
The Fine Gael man was one of the Taoiseach’s 11 nominees for the Seanad yesterday.
But outgoing Fine Gael senator Aisling Dolan lost out, in a massive blow to the Ballinasloe woman’s career.
Speaking to our reporter Eoghan Murphy this morning, Scahill paid tribute to his party colleague, expressed his delight at his own appointment, and confirmed he wants to run in the next general election.

Former Longford-Westmeath TD, Joe Flaherty, was also appointed to the Seanad yesterday.
He was beaten in the general election in November and also lost out in the recent Seanad elections.
