A forestry taskforce was set up by the government in response to the recent storms - which badly affected forests.

It sat for the first time on Tuesday, and Teagasc, Coillte and private forestry holders are involved.

But, speaking in the Dáil, Independent Ireland TD Michael Fitzmaurice says farmers need immediate supports.

Sligo-Leitrim TD Frank Feighan says trees should not be allowed to be planted near powerlines.

Also speaking in the Dáil, the Fine Gael deputy told Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon what to include in the forestry taskforce.

Sligo-Leitrim TD Martin Kenny, from Sinn Fein, says foreign repair crews working to restore power here have been horrified by Irish forestry management.
