He has been a TD in Roscommon-Galway since 2016 and for two years before that, in Roscommon-South Leitrim.

The Glinsk man had been strongly considering moving to Galway East because of a redraw of the constituencies.

Roscommon-Galway involves 16,000 fewer people from east Galway than in the last election.

Fitzmaurice admits that presents a challenge for him.

Geraghty lives between Roscommon town and Williamstown, and Independent Ireland was considering running him in Roscommon-Galway before a last-minute change of mind.

The Ballinasloe councillor says he’s looking forward to a run in Galway East, in his first bid at a Dáil seat.

He's full of praise for his Independent Ireland colleague.
