Hundreds of people have turned out to watch a special parade in Athlone town to mark the handover of Custume Barracks to the Free State 100 years ago today.
Defence Forces personnel, as well as vehicles from the barracks, paraded through Burgess Park and up Church Street before stopping on the Shannon Bridge just before 11am.
A special flyover took place and several RIBs from the navy moved up the River Shannon before a speech to mark the exact moment the barracks was handed over to Commandant General Sean Mac Eoin on February 28th 1922 at 11am.
Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council and Athlone native Frankie Keena says it was a very special occasion for the town.
