Unions have criticised the decision by Bank of Ireland to close 88 of its branches here.
15 more are to close in the North with the bank saying it’s because of a rise in digital banking.
SIPTU says the closures are a bolt out of the blue and a major shock for staff.
Roscommon Councillor and native of Elphin Valerie Byrne says the banks should offer the branches to local community groups rather than being sold off or becoming derelict :
Drumshanbo area Councillor Brendan Barry says it is a shock to hear that the branch will close in the town, especially after accessibility access to it was installed last year.
He says while the local post office is close by, there are no details yet if all services will be offered there:
