A leading epidemiologist claims that a different approach to Covid-19 could mean that counties like Roscommon or Leitrim could return to full audiences at GAA matches by October.
Professor Anthony Staines from the Department of Public Health at DCU says the strategy adopted in New Zealand and Scotland to drive the rate of infection to zero, rather than looking to live with the virus, will mean a greater incidence of clusters getting out of control.
He suggests that well as rigorous testing and a contact tracing regime, stepping up wearing face coverings and handwashing, to closing national borders, a policy of non-essential travel between counties should be in place.
This would mean different zones, green for virtually no restrictions, to red where lockdowns are in place.
Professor Stains explains says while non-essential travel across counties would be very difficult, it would be much more effective.
