Postmaster Paddy McCann, from Fairymount, told the crowd some people are even afraid they'll be killed. 

A protest against the spike in crime in Co Roscommon has heard people are afraid to open their doors - even to their neighbours.

This afternoon's rally in Castlerea, attended by around 130 people, repeatedly heard elderly people are living in fear.

Postmaster Paddy McCann, from Fairymount, told the crowd some people are even afraid they'll be killed.

Michael Scally, a former cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, said €50,000 has been spent on CCTV for St Nathy's Cathedral in Ballaghaderreen recently after the historic building was repeatedly targeted by thugs.

The protest heard from several victims of crime, while a politicians, including councillors and TDs, were also present.

There has been a spate of burglaries in Co Roscommon recently, with villages throughout the county attacked.

Michael Scally told Eoghan Murphy about the issues in St Nathy's Cathedral.

Eileen Kenny's shop, pub and house in Ballintubber has been burgled, as she told Eoghan.
