The Cathaoirleach of the Athlone Municipal District has hit out at multiple layers of red tape preventing works to alleviate flooding for residents in the south Roscommon area.
Councillor Donal Kilduff has called on the Minister for the OPW and Agriculture to come together to expedite works to progress drainage works in Rahara and its surrounds.
In a lengthy Facebook post, the independent Councillor says the OPW recently refused an invitation to attend a Municipal District meeting to discuss Lough Funshinagh as they did not have the resources to attend and says the solution to the flooding is well known - but there is no joined-up decision making on the issue.
He has also described the current system of government as 'dysfunctional' as TDs and senators raise the flooding issue in the Oireachtas pleading for state intervention in what he claims is a 'bureaucratic dictatorship:
