A voluntary mountain walking group in Leitrim is using sheep wool to develop a new bog walking trail.
The Mountain Meithal North West, in partnership with a landowner outside Manorhamilton and the Leitrim Development Company has reawakened an ancient Roman road building technique for a new trail on the Leitrim Way.
Sheep wool from the landowners flock is being used in place of wood or plastic to lay down the trail before it is covered with stones.
The Roman Empire used wool to develop many of its roads across Northern Europe and there's evidence that the foundation of nearby bridges on the former Sligo to Enniskillen railway also used sheep wool.
Bryan Fennell, Rural Recreation Officer with the Leitrim Development Company who initiated the project explains why it's more sustainable than any other materials being used.
