The three day mandatory waiting period for women to access abortion services is failing those who need access time sensitive care according to a local activist.
Leitrim Labour representative and Reproductive Rights campaigner Bernie Linnane argues that the enforced waiting period can change the nature of care open to those seeking the termination. The argument follows a major review of the current legislation, a report on which will come before the Dail tomorrow.
The review includes several recommendations including an end to the three-day-waiting period.
Speaking on the Joe Finnegan Show today, Bernie Linnane believes the vast majority of women who seek an abortion have firmly made their decision.
''We know that the mandatory three day period can change the type of treatment that's available to a person or perhaps prevent them from accessing treatment in this country at all. It might for instance put them over the time limit for a medical abortion through a GP where they then have to go to a hospital for treatment or it might put them outside of the 12 week time limit completely in which case people are still being forced to travel.''
