The newly appointed Chief Superintendent for the Roscommon/Longford/Mayo garda division is appealing to people to slow down this weekend.
Ray Mc Mahon who previously headed the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau says speed continues to be a major contributory factor in road deaths and injuries.
A review published this week by the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Siochana showed that from 1 January to 15 July, this year, 65 people died on Irish roads in 60 collisions.
