The Chief Superintendent for the Longford/Roscommon and Mayo Garda Division has defended a new high-tech communication system used for logging calls and dispatching units.
'Garda Safe' which has been introduced in recent months is a computer aided dispatch unit which assists with every 999 call made to An Garda Siochana.
At this month's meeting of the Roscommon Joint Policing Committee, Councillor Tom Crosby raised concern over the impact this new system might have on response times.
However the meeting heard it has been designed and developed to provide better real time decisions, more efficient responses and safer deployment of garda resources.
Speaking to Shannonside FM news after the meeting Chief Superintendent Ray McMahon outlined the benefits of Garda Safe.
'There's various levels of technology that are available now to Gardai through their mobility phone and the ANPR and how the system works within the control room which details where the nearest Garda or patrol car is to where the caller is calling from so the whole design of this is to get members of Gardai to get to the person in need in the shortest space of time.''
