The news comes as two books of condolences opened for him in council offices today - in Monksland and Roscommon town.

Fine Gael councillor John Naughten was due to become the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council next June, before his tragic death last Friday. The news comes as two books of condolences opened for him in council offices today - in Monksland and Roscommon town.

His funeral will take place in St Brigid's Church in Drum, Athlone, on Thursday at 11 o'clock. The council's longest-serving councillor, Independent Tom Crosby, says he was due to become the county's first citizen next year:

John was recently selected to represent Fine Gael in the general election in the Roscommon-Galway constituency. Councillor Crosby says he would have fared very well:
