Local Councillor backs call to remove candidate addresses from ballots

The Green party member believes it poses a security risk to candidates.

A local Councillor has echoed calls for the Electoral Commission to stop publishing home addresses of candidates on ballots.

Westmeath Councillor and Green Party Member Louise Heavin believes the practice should not be continued in the current political climate due to security concerns.

Green Party TD Patrick Costello has written to the Electoral Commission to say the practice should end because of the threat it poses to people running for office.

Homes of politicians have been targeted recently, including a window being smashed at the home of Councillor Hugh Lewis in Ballybrack in Dublin.

Councillor Heavin told Let's Talk today that the families of politicians should never have to be affected by such concerns.

'It's more when it's shared with strangers and there is a coordinated attack or protest outside your family home.

I have got two young kids aged three and four, 'Mammy what are these people doing outside our house?'

I don't know what I'd say to them if something like that happened. I don't want that happening at my house.

I am afraid of that happening to my family. They didn't sign up for this.'
