A Leitrim councillor is calling for a new site for Scoil Mhuire in Carrick-on-Shannon to be prioritized as part of the Carrick Area Development Plan.
A plan will soon be drawn up for land use in the area to cover from 2024 until 2029, following the recent adoption of the Leitrim County Development plan.
Councillor Finola Armstrong Maguire says there's a huge and obvious need for a new school facility with the present building at full capacity.
She says the town is trying to attract more people to come and live there, and that will mean accommodating more pupils.
The Fine Gael councillor says the Department of Education has indicated there's no need for land to be set aside but that's not the case.
'There was a general statement from the Department of Education referring to the school and their line was that what we have at the moment in the two campuses is meeting the needs of the people.
I would argue with that the school is at capacity. There is population growth within the area and we want to welcome people with families and assure them that we will be attentive to their needs when they come here.'
