Councillor Seamus Butler believes the current coin based parking system is outdated and expensive.
At this month's meeting of the Longford Municipal District, Councillor Butler called on the local authority to launch a similar programme to that used across County Tipperary.
The system requires a person to download the specific parking app onto a phone, register their details and pay their parking fee online.
The idea received substantial support from other councillors, with calls made that some machines should remain in the town for those who'd not have access to the app.
Councillor Butler says Longford must develop with the times.
''It's a sign as a town is moving with the times, we still want an alternative for people who wouldn't have access to that and that would be on a phased basis perhaps tickets will be bought and some of the old coin machines be left in place but I think we need to move ahead with this.''
